Wicked Wednesday: National Daquiri and Hot Dog Days

Another corny July Wednesday for you. Did you know today was National Daquiri Day AND National Hot Dog Day? Have you ever paired those two? Who has a favorite Daquiri recipe? And how do you take your hot dogs? Dish, Wicked and readers!HotDog

Edith: Here’s a Daquiri recipe from the Food Network.

  • 2 cups crushed ice, plus extra for chilling glass
  • 2 ounces light rum
  • 1-ounce freshly squeezed lime juice, strained of pulp
  • 1/2-ounce Simple Syrup, recipe follows

Liz: I can’t comment on the hot dogs… but I do love daiquiris! I found the best recipe for  a blueberry mint daiquiri on Boulder Locavore. Perfect for summer!

Barb: Let’s see. I love hotdogs. I always have trouble at barbecues with the “burger or dog?” question. I’m also partial to Nathan’s when on the road. Mustard and relish, please. My warm weather drinks are margaritas and mojitos, so not so much on the daquiris.

Jessie: With the exception of caipirinhas, I don’t care for sweet cocktails. I much prefer very dry martinis or Scotch. My husband, however, loves all sorts of sweet drinks that come with umbrellas and fruit garnishes. Whenever we order drinks when we are out the server invariably hands us the other person’s drink. Apparently there is gender attached to beverages.

Edith: Right with you there, Jessie – those fruity drinks taste too good and I forget they’re alcoholic. Give me my maxi-proof  straight up every time. Well, except for caipirinhas, the first mixed drink I ever had. It was in southern Brazil at the tender and untested age of seventeen – and wow!

Barb: That is so funny, Jessie. A few nights ago, after a long day of packing, my husband I and went to a local watering hole. I ordered a bourbon milkshake and Bill ordered a shot and a beer. The server who brought our drinks was not the person who took our order. He approached our table cautiously, took a big, deep breath and gave me the milkshake and Bill the shot and beer. “What if it had been the other way around?” I teased. “I don’t like this gender stereotyping.” We were all laughing by the end.

Sherry: I don’t have a favorite daiquiri recipe. But one of my favorite places I ever drank one was in Aspen, Colorado. I haven’t been there in years, but loved sitting outside on a lovely summer day watching people pass and looking at the mountains. The air is so fresh there unlike the heavy summer air of the East Coast. I love hot dogs but don’t eat them very often. I like them grilled, slightly burnt, on a bun with as many toppings as possible.

Edith: Sherry, what a lovely setting. And funny , Jessie and Barb, about the gender expectations (or not so funny?). I grew up with fried hot dogs with yellow mustard. Despite a number of years as a vegetarian and recent years as a minimal red-meat consumer — give me a great grilled dog with mustard and I’m yours.

Julie: Not a daiquiri girl. I stick with beer and wine. But I do love hotdogs. Like Barb, Nathan’s on the road. But the best hotdogs? At Fenway Park, naturally. Not sure how they pull it off, but nothing tastes better on a warm summer night. Relish and mustard, please.

35 Thoughts

  1. I’ll have a Fenway Frank and a beer, thank you. Mustard, sweet relish, and chopped onion, please.

  2. The first summer my wife and I were together, we came up with a tradition: no daiquiris until the thermometer hit 90. We had to do something to limit our consumption. These days it’s one way to mark a hot day. And, for the record, we’ll use our own homegrown strawberries, frozen in season unless it’s a really hot June and they’re fresh.

  3. Interesting pairing. I’ve never had a daiquiri but I’ve had hot dogs and no longer eat them. Can I substitute wine and chocolate cupcakes? 🙂

  4. Thanks for making our dinner plans easy tonight! ….though we’ll be making Hemingway’s Daquiri, which includes a little grapefruit juice and a little maraschino liqueur.

As for hot dogs: For many years, I ate lunch nearly every Saturday at the Roast Grill, a hot dog restaurant in Raleigh that’s been there since the 1940s. I liked mine there with mustard and chili (no ketchup!) and occasionally with slaw, but I generally enjoy a variety of toppings, trying out new things. Like Edith, we eat more vegetarian these days, less red meat, but hot dogs are indeed an exception, always….

    1. That Daquiri sounds great, Art. Chili on a hot dog – like chili you’d eat in a bowl? I can’t seem to picture it. I don’t put ketchup on my hot dogs, either.

  5. I’m firmly on the burger side of the “burger or hot dog” question. Given the option, I’d rather have a bratwurst. However, I do like Nathan’s and Hebrew National – ketchup and spicy brown mustard, please.

Best daiquiri I ever had was at a restaurant in the town where I went to college. Thick, great strawberry flavor and it came garnished with a real, perfect whole strawberry. I wonder if they still serve them.

  6. Hot dogs are okay. Sometimes I crave one and we’ll indulge in an all beef dog.

Daiquiris are also okay. I’m not much of a drinker but I imagine on a hot, humid summer evening a peach daiquiri might just hit the spot.

  7. Helloooooooooooo Wickeds… I’m not a big drinker but I do love hot dogs. I also have them in the freezer for a quick lunch. I’m actually posting with a request. The swag bag is empty and I have libraries to distribute bookmarks to who are waiting patiently. Is there any chance the six of you could help refill the bag for me?

    1. Can’t answer for the rest, but send your snail mail address and I’ll get some off to you. Better, message all the wickeds at once on FB so you don’t have to send it six times!

  8. I don’t drink alcohol, so I’ve never had a daquiri.

Barb, the correct BBQ answer to hamburger or hot dog is both. I like my hot dog with ketchup and pickle relish, please.

      1. I agree. But even if you just order the juice, it is usually so expensive. (Or I’m just cheap.)

  9. Glad for the menu suggestion! As it happens, there are some sausages in the fridge. That’s close, right? (Maybe I’ll go to the store.) Remember the bicentennial? Strawberry daiquiris were the thing in San Francisco, where I was going to college at the time. $3 for a lot of pinkish ice and a shot of booze, but you know, there were several strawberry daiquiri days in that ill-spent youth.

    1. I don’t get the bicentennial connection with daquiris, but I don’t have to. Good thing we all survived our ill-spent youths, not?

      1. The red of the strawberry daquiri as for the red, white and blue. I think they stuck little flags in them too. Really! It was quite common in San Francisco that year. The next year, the daquiries were peach.

  10. I either want a hot dog with mustard only or a chili cheese (shredded chedder) hot dog. Strawberry Daquiri is my favorite but don’t have them often.

  11. I’m not much of a drinker, but Red Lobster used to have a virgin strawberry daiquiris that were to die for. i’d be very tempted by those chocolate daiquiris, too. My favorite hot dogs are Skyline Chili’s cheese coneys with mustard and onion added. Cincinnati chili is the best with hot dogs!

  12. I no longer drink, but I was a big fan of daiquiris and really went wild when I learned of strawberry ones. But hot dogs? Oh, bring ’em on. Lots of flavorful mustard and relish. What’s a flavorful mustard, you ask? (You did ask, didn’t you?) Check out the National Mustard Museum website. Great place to visit and buy more mustard than you can eat in a lifetime. mustard museum.com The newsletter alone is worth the visit.

  13. Gender specific drinks? My husband and I were on a cruise and ordered drinks. I ordered bourbon and he ordered a mixed drink (it’s been many years and I don’t remember what). The server made a point of commenting on the “inappropriate” nature of our choices. Didn’t give much of a tip for that service.

    1. I’m usually a very generous tipper, but that server would have gotten nothing except a complaint to the boss. Sheesh. The nerve.

  14. My preference is one of those extra big hot dogs served on a bun with the works, preferably in one of those cardboard boats to catch the escaping works.
