Late fall in New England is a great time for reading. The sun sets wicked early. The pretty leaves are gone and it’s often dark and windy. Wickeds, it’s been a long time since we checked in on our reading. What are you reading this fall?
Edith: I’m starting to read my way through Lyndee Walker’s Nichelle Clarke Crime Thriller series and am loving it. Catriona McPherson’s just-out Go to My Grave is on its way, and I need to catch up with Sheila’s new series that began with Murder at the Mansion. Lea Wait’s Thread Herrings awaits, too, as does Mardi Gras Murder from Ellen Byron. So many books, so little time… Also, see the end of this post for our daily giveaway!
Liz: I started reading Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere. I’m really enjoying it! And I have a list a mile long too, Edith…
Barb: And the pile will be even bigger after Crime Bake… I just finished Edwin Hill’s Little Comfort. (Who’s read it? Can we discuss at Crime Bake this week?) Loved it. Now I’m on to Lea Wait’s Thread Herrings and Kaitlyn Dunnett’s Overkilt, both of whom were on the blog last week.
Sherry: Edith, I love Lyndee Walker’s Nichelle Clark books. Barb, I read Little Comfort about a month ago and am ready to discuss. Last Saturday I attended the Chesapeake Chapter of Sisters in Crime Author Extravaganza. We all took turns talking about our books 
that came out this year. After we signed books. I couldn’t resist buying some for myself and as Christmas gifts. The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey has been named a Publishers Weekly’s Best Book of 2018!
Jessie: All of those sound like fun! Right now my TBR list is housing The Dark Angel by Elly Griffiths, Atomic Habits by James Clear and The Mitford Murders by Jessica Fellowes.
Julie: I am reading a lot of business books right now, so I’m grateful for these suggestions! I’m moving Little Comfort up on my list. Going to crack open Murder Flies the Coop next.

I have an endless TBR pile! I am in the midst of A Crafter Knits a Clue, I have just finished Body on the Bayou. Oh my goodness, if that wasn’t the best book! I was laughing at some of the antics so hard I was crying and coughing!! I also finished Death of a Toy Soldier, which was amazing! Next up will be The Nightingale Before Christmas and A Cajun Christmas Killing. I am starting my holiday reads.

Barb, I too read and love LITTLE COMFORT. (http://bolobooks.com/2018/08/little-comfort-the-bolo-books-review/). Currently, I have a few books going. WINTERHOUSE, a delightful middle-grade “mystery.” I started a “definitely not cozy” creepy serial killer novel, DEAD RINGER, unexpectedly last night. And I am just finishing up a non-fiction book, AN UNEXPLAINED DEATH, about a case that took place in a local Baltimore historical hotel.
I clearly have to pick up a copy of Little Comfort!
I have way to many books to read. Right now I’m reading The Train to Impossible Places and I’m waiting for Kristen Painter’s newest Jayne Frost book to come from Amazon.

I just finished at ARC of BELOW THE FOLD, by RG Belsky and really enjoyed it. Also an ARC of THE BOOK ARTIST by Mark Pryor. I’m between books until I pick up BABY TEETH and NOVEMBER ROAD next weekend.
November Road has all the buzz. I think I am going to try it.

I could have picked up an ARC of NOVEMBER ROAD at B’con. Stupid me, I was trying to minimize my books so I didn’t have to pay for shipping back. Ugh.
Just finished an ARC of Past Due for Murder, and am going to start on Lyndee Walker’s series now. I got Kindle Unlimited for Christmas last year and haven’t used it much yet. I’m determined to only read KU books until my subscription runs out!
Interesting about Kindle Unlimited. My publisher no longer participates, so it’s sort of out of my view.
I’m reading If the Coffin Fits by Lillian Bell and have Designed for Haunting by Sybil Johnson as the next book to read. I need to pick up a copy of Catriona McPherson’s new book too. It sounds great!

My list is longer than the time I have. I am finishing Majick Run Amok right now. If I just grab off the of my pile I will be doing Antiques Ho-Ho-Ho, Glitter Bomb, Six Cats a Slayin’ and all of Ellen Byron’s Cajun Country Mysteries. Of course, it is Tuesday and my Kindle is blowing up with new releases and I think there will be 3 more on my front porch before the day is over…. Too bad I have to go to work.
Work does interfere with having fun.

I’m deep in Island of the Mad, latest in the Mary Russell series. Loving it! Like any long series, I’ve liked some more than others, but this is one of the best. Next up probably is the definitely not-cozy Sunrise Highway, by award-winning Peter Blauner, who writes terrifically about home territory. ( And know him from NY/MWA) Plus a non-fiction about gardens from Penelope Lively, one of my all time favorite novelists. A real change of pace. Which one to take to vote, as I am sure there will be a long wait?
I’ll be interested to hear about the wait. Just looked at the polling place across from my daughters house here in Boston. Steady traffic, but no line, at least outside.
Moderate wait with lines moving swiftly. I think I timed it to miss the voting-before-work and the voting- after-nursery-school-dropoff crowd.

Presently I’m reading A WRENCH IN THE WORKS by Kate Carlisle and loving it.
They are predicting a long, bitterly cold winter for us. The way the critters are bulking up and the color and thickness of their coats along with the persimmon prediction from the trees in our yard, I believe it too. Therefore, I’m looking forward to a warm fireplace, some hot spiced apple cider or a mug of hot cocoa and LOTS of cozy mysteries to tide me through to spring. Love a good story that keeps in guessing and interested to the very end. One with mystery and murder with a great if somewhat quirky person to lead the mystery solving. Throw in a touch of sweet romance and I’m hooked. I also love Amish stories that have a great story with romance, stories of faith and lessons we all could learn from.
There are so many authors that fill the bill on those type books (especially among the WICKEDS) and I’m hoping my pile of books to explode with many of their books. I’m hoping Santa is listening and my stocking is filled with great books to tide me through the winter.

I have finished Mardi Gras Murder (love New Orleans), Go to My Grave (gave me chills), Steamed Open (craved a lobster roll), Thread Herrings (who knew embroidery was dangerous) and The Widows of Malabar Hill, but those are just a few. So far this year I have read 217 book, but hey, that’s my job. Also just finished Murder on Cape Cod (learned a lot about Cape Verde Islands).

Right now I’m about 2/3 of the way through Lark the Herald Angels Sing by Donna Andrews (we’re now into November so I’m allowed to read Christmas-themed books) and it’s delightful and funny, as are all her series. I just finished the Yule Log Murders (are you detecting a theme here) and the next book on my list will probably be The Skeleton Makes a Friend by Leigh Perry (Toni L.P. Kelner) which Amazon just dropped into my Kindle last night. I’m really looking forward to spending some more time with Sid!
I read Go to My Grave last week and it’s very compelling. It’s really interesting that Catriona McPherson’s stand-alones have such a different tone and voice from her delightful (and funny) Dandy Gilver books. Go to My Grave is DEFINITELY not a light read, but it’s one of her best.
The great thing about an e-reader is that you always have a virtual stack of books ready to read. I remember that in my pre-Kindle days, I’d have to devote one suitcase just to hold my books. I have a t-shirt that has the definition of the word, “Abibliophobia” on it. “The fear of running out of books to read.” I don’t know about the rest of you, but if I don’t have at least 20 or 30 books waiting to be read in my Kindle, I’m apt to get the shakes and start breaking out into a cold sweat.

I am so honored to be on Edith’s TBR list! Then again, she’s on mine, LOL. I’m embarrassingly behind on reading, but TURNING THE TIDE is queued up on my Kindle, as well as books by Cynthia Kuhn, Anne Cleeland, Kathy Valenti, Barbara Early, and Hank Philippi Ryan. And that’s just some of them! I’m flying to NOLA tomorrow and plan on doing a LOT of reading in the airport and on the plane.

Some I’ve read and enjoyed so far are Go to My Grave by Catriona McPherson, Murder in Spite by Anne Cleeland, November Road by Lou Berney, The Craftsman by Sharon Bolton, and Storm Rising by Sara Driscoll (Jen J. Danna and Ann Vanderlaan). I also recently finished Elly’s Griffiths’ stand-alone, The Stranger Diaries, that is out in the UK now and will be out next year in the states, and, of course, I love it. And, I at last got to Jessica Ellicott’s Murder in an English Village and can’t wait to continue with Murder Flies the Coop. I’m currently reading Reason to Doubt by Nancy Cole Silverman. Coming up are Day of the Dead by Kristi Belcamino, The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton, Kingdom of the Blind by Louise Penny, and The Three Beths by Jeff Abbott.

I just started Denise Swanson’s Die Me A River….then I’ve got Jenn McKinlay’s Wedding Cake Crumble, Stabbed In The Baklava by Tina Kashian, Death Over Easy by Maddie Day, Treble At The Jam Fest by Leslie Budewitz, A Dark And Twisting Path by Julia Buckley, just to name a few. Last week it rained here quite a bit so I didn’t have to go to work (outdoor construction)… so my TBR pile got shortened by several books! It was so nice. I read the first in Sheila Connolly’s new series, Tart Of Darkness by Denise Swanson, Against The Claw by Shari Randall, Italian Iced by Kylie Logan, I Know What You Bid Last Summer by Sherry Harris, Premeditated Peppermint by Amanda Flower & Murder In The Locked Library by Ellery Adams. I have read 160 books so far and I read all the Wickeds and looking forward to all the new ones.I just picked up Sharon Farrows new book killed on Blueberry Hill loved the first two and enjoying this one.My kindle has a lot loaded so never without a book. I already have a good idea what I want to read in 2019.I often pick a book by the mood I am in and cozies are keeping me sane right now and if it is about Maine t usually makes me extra happy.Adore the Quaker series.

I’ve just finished Tasha Alexander’s, “Uneasy Lies the Crown” and am deep into Charles Finch’s, “The Vanishing Man: A Prequel to the Charles Lenox Series”. Loved the former and am enjoying the latter.

Did anyone else read AUNTIE POLDI AND THE SICILIAN LIONS by Mario Giordano? I loved that book and managed to score an advance copy of the sequel, AUNTIE POLDI AND THE VINEYARDS OF ETNA, so I am really looking forward to reading that.

They do. And they’re wonderful. They take place in Italy and are translated from German, but it all works!
I’m almost done with “Lord of the Wings” (Donna Andrews). Next up is “The Spook in the Stacks” (Eva Gates). Then on to “Plain Confession” (Emma Miller), “Death Overdue” (Allison Brook), “Shelved Under Murder” (Victoria Gilbert), “Lethal Licorice’ (Amanda Flower) and then “We Wish You a Murderous Christmas” (Vicki Delaney). Whew!
