Wicked Grateful–A Garden Squad Announcement!

By Julie navigating the Somerville snow

You know, when I started my writing journey with a goal of being a published author twenty-odd years ago, my dream was limited to holding a book I wrote in my hand. In 2015 that dream came true, with the publication of Just Killing Time, written as Julianne Holmes.

Since then, I’ve had three series. Last year Julia Henry joined the team, and Pruning the Dead was published. Tilling the Truth followed in August. I’m not sure how Lilly, Tamara, Delia, Ernie, Warwick and Roddy came into my imagination, but I’m so grateful they did.

The next Garden Squad will be released next fall (I’ll let you know more about that next month). But I have wonderful Garden Squad news to share.

There are going to be Garden Squads 4&5! I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to be telling more stories about Lilly et al. I have no idea where this series is heading, and look forward to introducing you to more Goosebush residents, and creating more gardening adventure.

Folks, without your support this wouldn’t have happened. So thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for your support of this series.

Have a wonderful holiday season!

  1. Oh Julie, that’s wonderful news. I’ve enjoyed the first two books so much. I’m genuinely thrilled that I’ll continue to be able to read about Lily and the other Garden Squad members. I really love those characters and their community – actually both their communities. First, the community of the Garden Squad members, but also the larger, physical community in which she resides. I can’t tell you how much I want to go out and find that lovely restaurant with the theater upstairs!

And that’s not to even mention the fantastic garden Lily has created in her home. How I’d love to have an opportunity to see it, or spend an afternoon sitting reading in the shade of one of those trees.

I’m no gardener. In fact, I’m the absolute opposite. If I lived near Lily, I’d be permanently banned from her Squad. I have no aptitude for gardening, and I’ve loathed the labor involved with it since childhood. Of course, I’ve now reached the age where I can claim decrepitude and incapacity to excuse me from those tasks.

However, perhaps in part because of my brown thumb and loathing of the type of work needed to create and maintain a garden, I have huge appreciation for gardens and those who not only have the talent to create and maintain them, but actually find pleasure and joy in the work involved.

I have a sinking suspicion that Lily would see right through me, and recognize me for the gardening shirker I am. But my pleasure in the results of the work of those who love gardens and gardening is real, and I can always hope she’d recognize that part and forgive the rest of my reprobate nature.

So, you see how real Lily, her friends, and her environment are to me? Thank you so much, Julie, for creating this universe that I can visit without having to endure the hot sun and hard, dirty work!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words! She might see right through you, but she’d find something for you to do that contributed to the whole. I really love creating this world, and am so glad it feels so real.

And yes, wouldn’t an old Woolworth becoming a theater/restaurant/bookstore be wonderful?

  2. Congratulations on wonderful news for both you and your admiring fans! Love you books and can’t wait for more, and more, and more.

  3. Congrats, Julie!! You really make me “see” the people and places you write about. I get totally immersed in Goosebush and Lily’s garden. Thank you for expanding my world.

  4. I love the Garden Squad series even though somehow I was born without the gardening gene myself. I just love those friends and how much they care about their community. I would love to be invited to Lilly’s for one of their impromptu dinners someday.

  5. Congratulations! I love this series and I’m happy for you (and for me because there will be more to come)!

  6. Super Congratulations!!!!! I am so excited for you and for me both!!!! I love The Garden Squad series!!!!!
