It’s finally summer – yay!
Wickeds, what/who are you reading now that the weather is warm and the beaches are (sort of) open?
Julie: I have so many books going right now. I just got Eddie Glaude Jr.’s book Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own. I’m also rereading Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series, and looking for a new series to dive into. And, of course, I have the Wickeds’ latest on my Kindle.
Jessie: I hear you, Julie! I never seem to be content with just one book at a time! I am currently reading When by Daniel H. Pink, Margaret the First by Danielle Dutton and The Angel’s Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I just finished Evil Things by Katja Ivar, a historical set in Finland, and An Oxford Tragedy by J. C. Masterman, both of which were really enjoyable reads.
Sherry: I rarely read more than one book at once. I’m looking forward to reading What You Don’t See by Tracy Clark, The Ninja’s Blade by Tori Eldridge, and I just finished Fields’ Guide to Pharaohs (The Poppy Fields Adventures Book 5) by Julie Mulhern. I try to balance my reading between thrillers and then something lighter.
Edith/Maddie: I don’t read more than one book at a time, either, Sherry. I’m currently reading Mary Feliz’s Snowed Under, and just finished Clara McKenna’s fabulous Murder at Blackwater Bend. I have the Low Down Dirty Vote (volume two) anthology of short crime fiction waiting on my kindle, and Shannon Baker’s The Desert’s Share. I admit I’m most excited about Ramona DeFelice Long’s debut novel, The Murderess of Bayou Rosa. I have it on my kindle, but I’m waiting for the paper copy, which is in the mail. She’s a master storyteller, and I know this is going to be a great read.
Barb: I’m a one book at a time gal, myself. Just returned from vacation, where I finished The Witch Elm by Tana French, which means I am totally caught up and have to wait for the next book like everyone else. Next, two books for Maine Clambake research. The Detective in the Dooryard: Reflections of a Maine Cop, by Timothy A. Cotton (best known for the Bangor Police Department Facebook page and the Duck of Justice) and The Thistle Inn: A Wee Bit of Scotland in Maine, by Hilary E. Bartlett.
Readers: What are you reading this July?
A lot of great books mentioned. I’m currently reading The Body Keeps the Score, (Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma). It’s heavy reading, but really fascinating. I have to read it in fits and starts. I’ll be pausing to read Al Dente’s Inferno by Stephanie Cole for the book club meeting coming up next week. Then the cozies list just keeps growing…..
The Cole title is fabulous!
One of my current reads is The Subject of Malice by Cynthia Kuhn. I’m enjoying it.
I love her books, Marla, although I confess to being behind a few.
I have already enjoyed reading several of the books listed above, including those by Tracy Clark, Tori Eldridge and Shannon Baker.
I have more than 50 Netgalley ARCs to read this summer. Top picks include The Key Lime Crime by Lucy Burdette, Tea and Treachery by Vicki Delany, The First to Lie by Hank Philippi Ryan, Quiche of Death by Mary Lee Ashford, The Ninja’s Blade (Tori’s 2nd book), Murder in the Bayou Boneyard by Ellen Byron and Sherry’s From Beer to Eternity.
And a few books I recently bought that are on my top TBR pile: Killer Chardonnay by Kate Lansing, Sister Dear by Hannah Kate McKinnon, Rolling Thunder by A.J. Devlin and Hide Away by Jason Pinter.

Having finished advance copies of Jennifer Greer’s A DESPERATE PLACE and Ellen Hart’s IN A MIDNIGHT WOOD for review purposes, I am headed back to my own stash of books. Up first, the Maddie Day Country Store mystery NACHO AVERAGE MURDER.
You can add Cheryl Hollon’s STILL KNIFE PAINTING to the list as well. After that, there’s some catching up I have to do on Jon Land’s MURDER, SHE WROTE books, Sheila Connolly’s County Cork and Orchard mysteries and hopefully EXILE by James Swallow, THE SHAMELESS by ACE ATKINS and THE STORIES YOU TELL by Kristen Lepionka (so I can then get her new book ONCE YOU GO THIS FAR which came out today).
If you add in various comics and magazines, I’m going to be pretty busy reading when I’m not EXTREMELY busy working.

I’m still working my way through the second in Bruce Catton’s Civil War triology,TERRIBLE SWIFT SWORD, and I’m reading Vanessa Lillie’s LITTLE VOICES. Next, I’ll be diving into THE MURDERESS OF BAYOU ROSA and I’m waiting on my mass-market paperback version of ALL FALL DOWN, by Rachel Howzell Hall.

Reading Leaving Lucy Pear by Anna Solomon–which has been languishing on the TBR pile for far too long. Also –for short breaks–reading an old issue of Alfred Hitchcock Mystery magazine..

I’m a one book at a time kind of guy. The exception is audio books. I’m about to finish ECHO PARK by Michael Connelly. So good.
I’m currently reading A DEADLY INSIDE SCOOP by Abby Collette. I just finished SOWING MALICE by Wendy Tyson, which was excellent. As far as new releases, I have THE QUICHE OF DEATH by Mary Lee Ashford up next. And close behind that will be FROM BEER TO ETERNITY by Sherry Harris. Maybe people around here have heard of her?

I am reading Sealed Off by Barb…and enjoying the clambake mystery series. Normally I read one non-fiction and one fiction at the same time. I just finished The Green Desert: A Silent Retreat by Rita Winters. It is an older book that I bought at a Library Book Sale in CO last summer. My TBR pile is shrinking, so I need to buy some more books!
