Wicked Wednesday – Moon in Music

Happy Wednesday! Today is all about the moon in music…some of my favorite examples are: Cat Stevens – Moonshadow, Moondance – Van Morrison, Bad Moon Rising – Creedence Clearwater Revival – which I never really appreciated until that episode of Zoe’s Extraordinary Playlist, for those of you who watch… In any event, Wickeds, do you have a favorite song that incorporates the moon?

Jessie: My favorite song involving the moon is Lua, Lua, Lua, Lua by Virginia Rodrigues. The title of the song translates to Moon, Moon, Moon, Moon. She is a Brazilian singer and one of my very favorites. I think her voice is simply magical. I’ve linked a video here so you can listen for yourself.

Julie: Andy Williams “Moon River” is wonderful. Loved it in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. This article is really interesting about the history of the song.

Edith/Maddie: I was going to say “Moon River” too, Julie. But definitely “Bad Moon Rising” – the lyric of which my sister and I first thought was, “There’s a bathroom on the right” – and kept singing it that way even after we got it straightened out.

Barb: I have to go with Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune.” It is such a classic and so ubiquitous we all know it even if we don’t think we do. https://youtu.be/CvFH_6DNRCY

Sherry: Barb, I used to play Clair de Lune on the piano. I love a lot of the old classics like Fly Me to the Moon, Glen Miller’s Moonlight Serenade, and Blue Moon. Here’s a link to the Frank Sinatra version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw1ZC6sZjIY

Liz: I love all of these – and I used to play Moon River on the piano when I was a kid. I think it’s the only song I could still play by memory.

Readers, do you have a favorite song that features the moon? Tell us in the comments!

15 Thoughts

  1. Dancing in the Moonlight by King Harvest! I just pulled it up on YouTube and was immediately transported back to high school.

  2. I’d have to do a deep dive into my big collection of hard rock and heavy metal to really come up with a good list of “Moon” songs that I like.

However, the first one that came to mind for me was Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Bad Moon Rising”.

  3. Two come to mind. Man on the Moon by R.E.M. and I Don’t Want to Live on the Moon by Ernie from Sesame Street. I listened to that one a lot when my kids were little.

  4. Lune, from the 1999 French musical, Notre Dame De Paris. Fantastic music and singers.

  5. My favorite has to be Moon River. In my (much) younger days, I sang in concerts and occasionally in competitions. I was an alto, so the Moon River score was perfect for my range. But, being me, I hammed up the solos with wild dramatic license. Great fun.

  6. “Moon River” was the first one that came to mind for me, too. Used to dance to it when I was taking ballroom dance lessons as a teen.

The one that I am constantly listening too now is “That’s Why God Made the Moon” by John Elefante

  7. I also learned to play Moon River on the piano and it remains a favorite song. The “moon” song that I have heard in recent years and enjoyed is “Moon, Moon, Moon” by Laurie Berkner. It is a song our granddaughter loved to hear and we would sing it to her as a lullaby. Sweet memories!

  8. I like all songs about the moon..Moonshawdows, Bad Moon Rising, Blue Moon (is my fav), Song about the Moon(Paul Simon), Here Comes The Moon (George Harrison), So many to love!!

  9. Another song that I forgot is actually a country song by Mary Chapin Carpenter. It’s called “The Moon and St. Christopher”. It’s a killer song amongst many to her credit!

  10. Have to go with Moondance Van Morrison and any jazz version of Moon River! and my mom used to sing the lullaby ” I see the moon , the moon sees me, down thru the leaves of the old oak tre. Please let the light that shines on me, shine on the one I love.” Anyone else ever hear that one when they were little?

  11. So many good examples, but my favorites are Moonshadow and Moondance are my absolute favorites as I love those artists. But Dancing in the Moonlight is great. And anything that Sinatra sings is fab.
