Last Beach Day Reads

Wickeds, we’re approaching the end of another summer (albeit a very strange summer) but I’m still hoping for a few last beach days. If I get them, I’m planning to bring some long-overdue reading with me. What are you planning to read in the last days of summer?

Edith/Maddie: I can’t wait to dive into The Darkest Evening, Ann Cleeves’ new Vera book, but it’s not out until September 8. But next week I can pick up Julie’s Digging Up the Remains, which I’m also eagerly anticipating! I have barely been to the beach and actually have gone today. All the books I’m currently reading are on my Kindle, which I don’t take to the beach, so I brought a few New Yorkers to catch up on – and a pad of paper and a pen, too.

Barb: I have on order, Louise Penny’s All the Devils are Here, which releases September 1. And, like Edith, I eagerly await The Darkest Evening, so I predict excellent reading before and after Labor Day weekend this year.

Sherry: I’m looking forward to reading The Key Lime Crime by Lucy Burdette. It’s hard to beat a visit to Key West! I’m also thrilled to have an ARC of Jennifer J. Chow’s next book Mimi Lee Reads Between the Lines the second book in her Sassy Cat mystery series.

Julie: Thanks, Edith! The Wickeds are keeping me reading! I’m reading Caste by Isabel Wilkerson, and The Plot is Murder, V.M. Burns first book in her Mystery Bookshop series.

Liz: Thanks Wickeds – I’ve just added a bunch of books to my own already-long reading list! I’m about to dig into Sherry’s newest, From Beer to Eternity, and I’ve also had Elizabeth Gilbert’s City of Girls sitting on my bookshelf for a while so that will be next.

What about you, readers? What’s on your reading list these days? Tell us in the comments below.

24 Thoughts

  1. I’m blessed to have beach days year round here in Florida. The Wicked’s recent post by Debra Goldstein sent me to my TBR pile and I’m halfway through “One Taste Too Many.” Loving it!

  2. I have Death of a Wicked Witch by Lee Hollis and The Key Lime Crime by Lucy Burdette ready to read. They are 2 of my many favorite series based in 2 of my favorite places.

  3. I’ve been in a cozy mood much of the summer. I’m currently reading Julie Mulhern’s Killer Queen and I just finished Kathi Daley’s A Mew Beginning.

  4. I’m currently reading All We Buried by Elena Taylor. It’s a book I’ve been reading for a while, but with my short attention span this summer have yet to finish.

      1. Sherry, these types of threads are horrible for the TBR pile, aren’t they? At the rate I’m reading you will probably finish the book before I do. (I’m enjoying it, but current events have left me unable to concentrate on one thing for very long.)

  5. I am about to start Debra Goldstein’s Too Bites Too Many and, for when I’m in a more serious mood, The Tatooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris. No beach for me so I’ll tuck into a comfy position and spend the better part of a day reading today.

  6. I am about to begin Debra Goldstein’s Too Bites Too Many and have in my TBR pile, for when I’m in a more serious reading mood, The Tatooist of Auschwitz. No beach for me, but I’ll settle into a comfy chair and do some reading today.

    1. Ooh, the Tattooist has been on my list too. You’ll have to let me know how it is. Like you, I need to be in a certain mood for something like that.

  7. Liz, you’re going to love From Beer to Eternity; it’s great!

I just finished The Last Mrs. Summers, Rhys Bowen’s latest Her Royal Spyness mystery. It’s essentially a homage to Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca and I enjoyed it very much, as I have all of her books.

I’ve just started The Grove of the Caesars by Lindsey Davis, the latest in her Flavia Albia series set in Ancient Rome.

My next book after that is Donna Andrews’ The Falcon Always Wings Twice. I can never decide whether I adore or hate the puns in her titles, but the books themselves are always wonderful and hilarious. My favorite character is always Spike, the Small Evil One, so I’m hoping he makes an appearance in this one.

After that I have dozens of other summer reads waiting in my TBR stack, and I fear summer will be long gone before I finish my summer reads.

  8. Beach reads? August? I’m already working on my September TBR pile. Should be finishing my first September book today, in fact – THE FIRST WAVE by James R. Benn. Definitely a more serious book than the cozies I normally read. Going for light next with DITCHED 4 MURDER by JC Eaton.

Among other books on my TBR pile at the moment are new books by Edith, Sharon Farrow, and Ellen Byron

  9. I just started reading your Kneading To Die, the first book in the Pawsitively Organic series. I’m loving it so far.

  10. Good Evening! I hope will all consider a wonderful outdoorsy, beach read – The Green Beach File.
As an environmental attorney, I thought it would be fun to write a novel that raises some serious environmental issues, but couches them in a fun and suspenseful mystery. It is getting really great reviews on Amazon and Goodreads, and I hope you will check it out!! – K.A. Perry

  11. Thanks for mentioning MIMI LEE READS BETWEEN THE LINES, Sherry! I also have a few ARCs in hand. I just read and loved Olivia Blacke’s KILLER CONTENT, which debuts in Feb 2021. I’m looking forward to reading Kate Lansing’s A PAIRING TO DIE FOR, which is the sequel to her fabulous KILLER CHARDONNAY.
