A Good Conversation and **giveaway**

I used to be an early adapter/fan of tech and social media. I’ve been on Twitter and Facebook since they were launched. And I became a fan of podcasts when they were just starting to take hold.

It started with a podcast called Downstage Center. Howard Sherman, who was then the executive director of The American Theatre Wing, interviewed theater people about their journey. I used to assign the interviews with producers and artistic directors to my theater management students. Howard and I connected on Twitter, and we became friendly. He even visited my class once.

Since then there have been hundreds of podcasts produced, and I listen to quite a few. This spring I became the executive director of Sisters in Crime, a wonderful organization that I’ve been a member of for over 20 years. “Sisters in Crime was founded in 1986 to promote the ongoing advancement, recognition and professional development of women crime writers” according the the website. This is true, but the umbrella of who the organization supports and the range of that support has grown enormously. I’m thrilled at this next adventure in my professional life.

I’m also thrilled by one of the projects I’ve taken on–I’m hosting The Sisters in Crime Writers’ Podcast. I get to have wonderful conversations with writers about their writing journey, their process, and their publishing path. I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed each and every conversation. As I write this post, I’m getting ready to interview Tracy Clark and Delia Pitts. The Catriona McPherson, Faye Snowden, Sandra SG Wong, and Kate Flora episodes have all been released. And this week’s special guest was our own Barbara Ross, who also serves on the national board of SinC.

I don’t know about you, but I love learning. I also love listening to people who are passionate about their work.   1. I have listened to two episodes of the SinC podcast- Catriona MacPherson and Barbara Ross- both were informative as a new mystery writer! I like the short form of the podcast- just perfect for a quick walk or break from writing. One of my favorite podcasts is also about reading- What Should I Read Next where the host, Anne Bogel, talks to a reader about their reading life and recommends 3 books to try. It adds to the TBR!

  2. I listen to Dana Kaye’s Your Breakout Book and Writer’s Detective Bureau regularly. And I love love loved Renegades: Born in the USA with Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen. Hated to come to the end of that one. I just added the Sisters In Crime podcast to my Spotify library and can’t wait to start listening!

  3. I clearly need to start listening to these, Julie! Anything with you as interviewer is going to be fabulous. How long does it take you to prepare for each one? And have you made a little recording studio in your closet, or does it work to record them anywhere?

    1. Oh, I didn’t answer the question. I don’t listen to podcasts, but I try to catch Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me and Says You on NPR every weekend. If I miss a Wait Wait, I listen on their archives. Kind of like a podcast?

  4. I used to listen to quite a few science fiction TV show related podcasts like The Signal and Firefly Talk (For Firefly/Serenity), The Scapecast (for Farscape) and The Babylon Podcast (for Babylon 5).

    I also used to listen to The Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. It’s hosted by Marc Gunn, a Celtic musician from Georgia.

    These days, I don’t listen too that many shows. But the two I catch the most are Tuning Into Sci-Fi TV, which is billed as “the viewer’s guide to genre television”. I’ve been listening to that one for quite a long time and I’ve had voicemail feedback featured on the show in recent episodes.

    I also listen to Marc Gunn’s Pubsongs podcast which deals with not only his Celtic music but the sci-fi related songs he does as well.

    A friend of mine recently started a music related podcast called The Rock Is George Podcast. It features interviews he does with rock musicians and other stuff as well.

    I haven’t listened to any book related podcasts, but I’ll have to check out this Sisters in Crime show for sure.

  5. I tried listening to podcasts, but my mind wanders and I want to do other things and lose the concentration.

  6. I have never listened to a podcast. Now that I am spending evenings crocheting, it might be a good time to figure out how to plug in my ears!

  7. It took me a while to get into podcasts. Now I listen to Dana Kaye’s Your Breakout Book and The Writer’s Detective Bureau, like Annette. I also listen to one called Late Bloomer Living (I was a guest on this almost a year ago). I’ll have to check out the SinC podcast!

  10. I have never listened to a podcast. I must be behind the times because I have never listened to an audiobook either. Maybe I’m just weird. LOL

  12. Doing this podcast was so much fun! I listen to podcasts while doing housework, particularly laundry and also while getting dressed and tidying in the morning. I’m more of a “one in each category” person, so Pod Save America, History of English, All Things Cozy, Writers Bone, and for my current obsession–Outlandercast.

  13. I like The Thrilling Adventure Hour. It’s like an old-time radio show. It ended awhile ago, but now and then they’ll do a new special.
    I also have been watching The Food That Built America and found out there’s a podcast for that that I intend to listen to sometime.

  14. I’m a fan of The Well, by Anson Mount and Branan Edgens. They discuss creativity in all forms and how folks draw on that well of creativity in their lives. I learn something new every time I listen to it.

  15. I like Rachel Maddow’s podcast explaining the Agnew Vice Presidential scandle.

  16. I don’t listen to that many podcasts. I’ve found the All Things Cozy podcast, which I enjoy. And I discovered The Babylon Podcast, about the show Babylon 5. It’s years old, so I have hundreds of episodes to catch up on. And at some point, I will.

  17. I haven’t tried listening to Podcasts yet. I’m sure they are interesting to listen to, but I just haven’t found the time to find something I would like.

  18. I’m a radio lifer, and I can’t resist a good interview. Most of my favorites are colleagues and writer friends — a new one to try is Mario Bosquez’ “Run the Dish,” which is about food, culture, writing and more. And the SinC Writers’ Podcast is wonderful!

  19. Since I work from home, I listen to podcasts while I work. I mostly listen to categories related to cats, home improvement, or politics. I really need to start listening to my favorite authors on podcast! 🙂

  21. Great news about the podcast, Julie! I love podcasts but one of my favorites is The History of England. I also love Shedunnit and Royal Blood, lore and Cabinet of Curiosities.

  23. I have never listened to a podcast. I did try to listen to an audiobook once but sorry to admit I fell asleep. I am a lover of the written word and I feel that also helps my brain to concentrate more to the storyline.

  25. I’ve never understood podcasts, but I would LOVE an ARC of Wreathing Havok. Back before I got heavily in reviewing, I would listen to the radio as I knit. Nowadays, I find I have WAY too many waiting emails to even turn the radio on. Back to the now 8,195 unread emails…
