Wickeds, the long, lovely weekend is upon us. If I know my Wickeds, over the next four days you’re going to sneak in some time with a book. Tell us, what are you reading?
Edith/Maddie: I just finished The Bombay Prince, Sujata Massey’s third Mystery of 1920s India, which was just as good as the first two, and I loved Mia Manasala’s debut cozy, Arsenic and Adobo. I’m excited to have Pardonable Lies on my stack, another Maisie Dobbs historical mystery, as well as the latest issues of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. Short stories are great reads to tuck in between visits or holiday cooking.
Julie: I’ve got a toppling TBR pile. First up is and arc of Death at Greenway by Lori Rader-Day. I’ve been saving that one for a long weekend. I’ve also got The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris, Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden and A Spy in the Struggle by Aya de Leon on the pile.
Jessie: I always love this question, Barb! I am currently tucking into Saxons vs. Vikings by Ed West. Up next is The Devils of Loudun by Aldous Huxley and Midnight at Malabar House by Vaseem Khan.
Liz: I have a huge TBR pile too, Julie! Right now I’m bingeing Bosch books to celebrate the 7th season dropping on Netflix. Next up is The Concrete Blond.
Barb: All these books sound so intriguing. I want to read Saxons vs. Vikings, though I only made it through an episode and a half of The Last Kingdom. Worth sticking with it? And, I’ve already binged the final season of Bosch. They definitely stuck the landing. I’ve been reading a lot of books lately for blurbs and because I was moderating a panel. Fortunately, they are all good and some of the panel ones are great, but it feels a bit like homework. I don’t know how our book blogger friends do it! So I’m going to indulge myself this long weekend with a purely voluntary, non-research, not-in-my-genre read, Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet.
Sherry: I’m reading an old book by Fern Micheals. I always think of her as a romance writer but she has a more action oriented thriller type book. It’s Weekend Warriors and is the first book in a long-running series!
Friends: What are you reading this long weekend?
I love hearing what others are reading! I read cozies during the week as research for writing my own- this week I read Tara Lush’s Grounds for Murder and Leslie Budewitz’s Killing Thyme. I save my off-genre reading for the weekends, and I have Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library and Marie Benedict’s The Mystery of Mrs Christie queued up for the holiday weekend!
This sounds like a wonderful line up! I love the Spice Shop mysteries.
My holiday was yesterday but then again since I retired, as a friend said, “every day is Saturday”…I have The President’s Daughter and a book about In the Heights waiting for me at the library so I’ll be reading them. (I’m #2 for Arsenic and Adobo).

Our book club read this and we loved it.
I’m currently in the middle of reading the J.C. Vaughn book SECOND WEDNESDAY. It’s the first book in his Donovan Bay P.I. series.
I just received the ARC of the Ronald H. Balson book DEFENDING BRITTA STEIN, which is going to have to be my read over the weekend I’m sure because I am supposed to do a review of it for Mystery Scene. And the book was late getting to me because of course it would be.
I’m part of the Mitch Rapp Ambassador Program so I also just received an advance copy of the next Mitch Rapp book by Kyle Mills. It’s called ENEMY AT THE GATES and I’m really looking forward to reading that book as well.

I’m reading Emma Jameson’s A DEATH AT SEASCAPE HOUSE and the ongoing judgement of one defined as a “wild child” makes me grateful for all the times I gave the benefit of the doubt and allowed a student a fresh start, or as one put in a note, “thanks for all the second chances.” I want to wade in and defend Jem against unfairness, which means Emma has done her work well. <3
This book sounds really interesting.
I should be finishing THE PLOT IS MURDER by V. M. Burns today. Up next is THE MAGIC SQUARE by John Gaspard, then MUDER AT THE FORTUNATE TELLER’S TABLE by Janet Finsilver. After that, I’ll be diving into new releases coming out at the end of July.
As to how I do it, you’ll noticed that all three of the books I just named came out previously. I try not to take on more than four or so ARCs in any given month so I can read books that I’ve bought by haven’t read yet. It doesn’t always work out. September, I only have one non-ARC opening, and October is at 5 ARCs, if I remember correctly. So is August for that matter. It’s why I talk about publishers needing to check their publication schedule with me. 🙂

Christopher Paolini’s “To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. Not a cozy mystery but an exciting Sci-Fi with mythology elements. A long book at almost 900 pages, so it’s going to take me a while to get through it.
Wow. Sounds like more than a long weekend’s reading.
