Wicked Wednesday: Celebrating Gratitude

Edith/Maddie here, with our last Wicked Wednesday focused on celebrating.

Tomorrow is American Thanksgiving. The holiday has lots of history and mythology attached to it, which we won’t go into. Many regard the day as an opportunity to gather with loved ones and share food – I know I do – and to be grateful for blessings.

Wickeds, will you celebrate your gratitude for food and dear ones tomorrow? How will the table look? What is your favorite – and least favorite – dish to prepare? What are the blessings you’re grateful for?

Julie: I will celebrate with loved ones tomorrow. It has been a tough year in a number of ways, but we’re going to celebrate the blessing of being together. I’m always the pie maker, so I’m working on those. I also make the sweet potato casserole. We make a roasted vegetable mix that includes beets, Brussel sprouts, carrots, and parsnips. It’s a pain to prep, but so, so good.

Edith/Maddie: I am more than thrilled to be hosting my favorite holiday tomorrow, with family and the close friends we always gather with – except for last year, of course. I’ll set the white damask tablecloth with my mother’s china and my grandmother Dot’s silver. I’ll bake four pies today, with my son and his wife’s help, and roast a fresh turkey tomorrow, spatchcocked and dry-rubbed, with my mother’s bread dressing on the side, plus smashed potatoes and gravy. Guests will bring smiles, wine, and all the sides. What could be a better celebration of how many blessings we have?

Barb: I’ll be at my daughter’s house. My son and his family will be there, too. (Assuming everyone has negative covid tests. Nervously awaiting results as I write this.) I’ll make the turnips before we leave Portland. At my daughter’s house, I’ll make the apple and mince pies with my granddaughters. My mother’s dressing will be my contribution to the main meal on the day.

Liz: I’m having a low-key day with a friend, and yes we’re doing my go-to feast – the vegan meal from Whole Foods. It’s been quite the year, with so many blessings to celebrate and so many new, exciting chapters to look forward to. And I’m really looking forward to the pumpkin pie!

Sherry: We are having a small Thanksgiving too. My daughter isn’t a big fan of traditional Thanksgiving food so I think I’m going to make Chicken Marsala. It’s a dish we all like. I haven’ thought about sides yet but there will be pumpkin and apple pie. We have lots to be grateful for — most of all that we will be together.

Jessie: Sherry, I love to make Chicken Marsala for Easter! We will be hosting a family gathering which will include traditional and additional foods. I am always happy to make the meal for loved ones, but do find myself missing my grandmothers and aunts on the days leading up to the festivities quite keenly. One of my grandmothers always came to help me to prepare and was a delightful conversationalist. I am very grateful that I have members of the younger generation that pitch in and are just as good company!

24 Thoughts

  1. We are going to the beach. There is a restaurant we like to go to that’s across from the beach that has a lovely view. Then we usually take a walk and if warm enough go for a swim and I like to look for shells and of course, read. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!!

  2. We’re thankful for a year of growth, not in expected but meaningful ways. Tomorrow, a simple meal with food we love, enhanced by those we cherish.

  3. We’re going to a Chinese buffet, not very pilgrimish but we’ll keep thankful hearts and a grateful attitude nonetheless! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  4. It’s just hubby and I, so our Thanksgiving will be quiet. We had many offers to join others that we consider family by choice, but the idea of traveling and being in large crowds (especially when some seem to be against vaccination), we have decided home is where we would rather be.

Learned to be thankful for each and every day, but Thanksgiving gives up a reminder to take pause and to be thankful for the little things we often forget or take for granted. It’s easy to be thankful for the new promotion or the increase of income right when times are rough, but we often forget things like food on the table when many have so little or having a warm home when others don’t have a home or no money to pay the utility bills to keep it warm. I’m thankful for the people that come into my path from those that are now dear friends to medical professionals that are helping with my pain issues.

We were going to wood fire grill a steak for Thanksgiving, but now the forecast is talking very cold temperatures. We are in the middle of deciding now what sounds good. We had a craving for chicken and dressing and all the appropriate sides about two weeks ago so our meal won’t be the traditional one most think of. Whatever it is will be a meal shared with the love of my life which makes me very happy.

  5. It will be a small celebration in my house – just my husband, two kids, and my brother-in-law. But there will be turkey, dressing, potatoes, biscuits, cranberry jelly (out of a can, a tip to my husband’s childhood) and two kinds of pie (apple and pumpkin). So we should be good and stuffed by the time it’s all over!

  6. We will have a traditional Thanksgiving meal which I will cook, since I don’t mind doing it. My daughter and her wife will be here after they have a meal at her sister-in-law’s (they will be stuffed at the end of the day!), and my daughter-in-law and her two girls will be with us, but my oldest son is working. My youngest son and family will be hosting my daughter-in-law’s family for the holiday. It will be low key but fun and since they all help clean up, not all that much work for me! It’s just nice to be together this year.

  7. Happy Thanksgiving, Wickeds! This year, we’re getting together with some of my wife’s family, some of whom we haven’t seen in two years. Cheers!

  8. I’ll be at my brother’s house, as always. I’m actually about to leave to start driving north.

    Have a great day, everyone!

  9. Happy Thanksgiving to the Wickeds and fans from the US. Hope you have a safe (in-person) gathering, big or small, with family and friends. Canadian Thanksgiving was on October 11. Because of my dad’s sudden death in late September, I skipped the traditional feast and am looking forward to better times in the New Year for me and everyone here.

  10. My husband and I will be at our daughters and her little families house, they live about 3 blocks away from us, so we will be spending Thanksgiving with them, we usually spend it with them or at our house and they come over. May you all have a Very Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving.

  11. We have just a small immediate family gathering for Thanksgiving. Our tradition is going to the movies. We have a Ham dinner with potato salad, green beans, deviled eggs and pumpkin pie and cookies for dessert. Then we either are calling our friends and family to wish them a Happy Thanksgiving or they are calling us. We live in Washington and our family lives in Californis and an older son in Texas with his family. We also watch Macys Parade on TV in the morning.
