Still in Key West, eking out the last of the warmth before packing up to take the l-o-o-ong trek home on Friday.
While here in Key West, I had the chance to attend both sessions of the Key West Literary Seminar. The seminar occurs annually in January and examines literature and writing from a different perspective every year. (In fact, author Lucy Burdette had a lot of fun with the seminar in the second book in her Key West Food Critic Mystery series, An Appetite for Murder. All characters are fictional, of course!)
This year the topic was The Dark Side–Crime Writing. Here are some of the provocative/interesting things the authors said in Week One of the seminar.
Note: If you want to see quotes from the first week of the Key West Literary Seminar, including authors Lee Child, Tess Gerritsen, Elizabeth George, Michael Connelly and many others, see my post today on the Maine Crime Writers blog.
Amazing quotes, Barb. You’re lucky to have been able to attend.
We’ve had a great month here. Will be sorry to pack up the car on Friday.
Thanks for sharing these, Barb. I’ll be mulling over the quotes from Laura Lippman and Gillian Flynn for days.
Interesting perspective, right?
Wonderful. Thanks.
You’re welcome, Gram. Thanks for reading.
What a stellar group of authors. Sorry I missed this one!
It was fantastic.
Fab post, And thanks for delivering them like this–makes them easy to cut out and paste.
Ooh, I hadn’t thought of that. Great idea.
Glad that Joyce Carol Oates was included in that group. Her stories dig deep into dark sectors of personality, often times in relation to a crime.
Hi Joe
Joyce Carol Oates revealed that her grandfather , a Hungarian immigrant was murdered in 1917, and as a result her mother was given up by her mother to be brought up by another family. She wondered, “Do most crime writers have an unsolved mystery in their lives?”
Interesting. I think many crime writers do. Or they absorb stories from their surroundings.
Great quotes. I hope everyone went over to Maine Crime Writers and read the rest! Thanks for sharing — what a fantastic experience.
Barb, I love these quotes! Reading them is like all of the best takeaway thoughts from an education. You have this little list in your head, and you are inspired and know where to go when you need to know more.
Going on to week two, also. You created a mighty fine format, coupled with pithy quotes that will be popular pass-alongs. Thank you.
My favorite here is Stephen L. Carter’s. Something to always keep in mind!
