This month we’re getting 2024 started the right way.

Wickeds, the strikes this past fall will throw schedules off, but are there any television shows or movies that you’re particularly looking forward to this year? Or shows you’re going to rewatch?
Edith/Maddie: I always look forward to new installments of Call the Midwife, and I’m grateful the show has been renewed through 2026. New episodes of Grantchester are coming up, as well. I’m hoping for another season of Somebody Somewhere, one of the funniest and most touching shows I’ve watched lately.
Sherry: I’m really hoping the next season of Emily in Paris comes out this year. I know things were delayed by the writers and actors strikes. It’s a bit of fluff that takes me away from reality with beautiful clothes, beautiful people, and Paris.
Liz: I love Emily in Paris, Sherry! I also hope there’s a new Ginny and Georgia – that show is really good too. And of course, Bosch Legacy and Lincoln Lawyer – both faves.
Barb: This post did me the favor of driving me to those “Shows to Watch in 2024” articles that appear this time of year. Maybe we are finally nearing the end of the “is this show cancelled or is it just the pandemic/strikes that are delaying it?” conversation. I am particularly looking forward to Slow Horses, season 4, True Detective, season 4, Bridgerton, season 3, Outlander, season 7B, Bluey, season 3, part 3, The Bear, season 3, The Diplomat, season 2, Emily in Paris, season 4, Vera, season 13.
Julie: I am amazed at how few of these shows I’ve seen, and am grateful for the list. Looks like I need to watch Emily in Paris! I am a Clive Owen fan, and am looking forward to Monsieur Spade. I haven’t watched A Murder at the End of the World, and look forward to that as well. I do love being able to rewatch previous seasons, and will do that in prep for Slow Horses. Also hoping for another season of Only Murders in the Building.
Jessie: Julie, I want to watch Monsieur Spade too! I’m looking forward to the next season of Whitstable Pearl on Acorn and Miss Scarlett and the Duke on PBS. I am certain I will continue to rewatch old favorites like Justified and Endeavour.
Readers, what are you looking forward to watching in 2024?
I love this question! Miss Scarlett and the Duke, and All Creatures Great and Small, are my favorite shows, each beginning their fourth season on PBS on January 7th. I’ve seen the first episode of each, and they reminded me how much I enjoy them. Besides the stories themselves, the photography in each is spectacular. I especially love the sunlit scenes in dark rooms, very dramatic, in Miss Scarlett, and the riot of detailed color in the kitchen and breakfast scenes, in All Creatures. Each season can be short, I think Miss Scarlett has six episodes in each season. But both shows very much worth watching however short the season!

Mary, I watched the first season of Miss Scarlett, but haven’t watched the rest. Must catch up!

I finished watching 2 of most anticipated shows/seasons in the first week of 2024.
SLOW HORSES, Season 3 on AppleTV+. This season’s plot is adapted from Mick Herron’s third book, Real Tigers. Brilliant, quirky British spy drama, best season so far.
GHOSTS (UK) Season 5 on CBC GEM (also just released on AMAZON PRIME in the US). I binged watched the first 6 episodes in October. They released the series finale (sob) on Christmas Day, and I watched it on New Year’s Day. A fitting end to the series.
I was overjoyed to find actor STANLEY TUCCI SEARCHING FOR ITALY on my streaming channel last week. I don’t have cable TV, so I couldn’t watch the episodes when they were originally broadcast on CNN. There are 2 seasons of Tucci visiting different regions of Italy & eating/drinking the local specialties. I am salivating just watching the episodes.
THE RELUCTANT TRAVELLER WITH EUGENE LEVY on AppleTV+.
Stunning drone & local photography along with hilarious commentary as 75-year old Eugene (of Schitt’s Creek fame) steps greatly out of his comfort zone trying crazy things in 8 exotic locations:
Lapland, Costa Rica, Venice, Utah, Maldives, South Africa, Lisbon and Tokyo. He’s a picky eater but he was willing to try (and enjoy eating) unknown foods as the season progresses. And it doesn’t hurt that Eugene is staying in some pretty luxurious accommodation
And being a lifelong Trekkie, I eagerly await upcoming seasons of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS, the Section 31 movie with Michelle Yeoh, and hopefully STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS (probably delayed to 2025 due to SAG & writers strike).

Grace, you’ll be happy to know that Stanley Tucci is doing a new show for Nat Geo going back to Italy again. Here’s the newslink: https://deadline.com/2023/12/stanley-tucci-returns-to-italy-nat-geo-1235666618/

I can’t wait for SLOW HORSES. Best season yet? Yay!
How did I not know you were also a Trek fan? We must discuss next time we see each other. I will confess I haven’t been watching the newer series. Need to do that.

JULIE: Oh yes, being a Trekkie is another sign of my lifelong nerdiness. We can chat about this & all things Trek at an upcoming conference!

I’m looking forward to all the regular shows that I watch coming back for what will be shortened seasons. I generally keep a weekly schedule list that I print out but since the strikes destroyed the fall start of the new TV season, I haven’t printed it out yet.
The new Night Court is already back for Season 2. The same problems exist from the first season so far though. The new characters outside of Abby Stone are gawdawful. But at least they got rid of one of them so far. And NCIS: Sydney has been okay but nothing spectacular.
Speaking of the NCIS franchise, I’m looking forward to the 2nd episode of the new season which will be dedicated to David McCallum as the characters learn of the passing of his character. It’s an episode that will be co-written by co-star Brian Dietzen and I’m sure it will be a moving and touching episode to give the actor and character a proper goodbye.
For streaming services, I’m looking forward to the final season of Star Trek: Discovery and Bosch Legacy. I’m working on catching up on The Lincoln Lawyer before Season 3 comes out.

I tried Night Court but didn’t love it. I will need to watch the David McCullum tribute. His presence was always part of that show. I haven’t watched it as much in the past couple of years, but may do a rewatch.

If “The Lincoln Lawyer” comes back, we’ll definitely watch that one. Also the second half of the second season of “Reacher.” I don’t know if they did it on purpose, but we only got the first half. If it was on purpose, I hate this concept of “release half a season and make people wait for the second half.”

That’s weird about REACHER, season 2. I have 8 episodes on Amazon Prime here in Canada. But I do know that we don’t always release new content the same way as streaming channels as in the US. For example, the first 6 episodes of GHOSTS (UK) Season 5 were accessible on CBC GEM from October. But US viewers didn’t get access to this last season until late December on Amazon Prime, I think.

Yeah, I just checked and I only see through Episode 6. Sounds like we’re behind at least Canada.

Liz, “The Lincoln Lawyer” was renewed for a third season (though Neve Campbell is not coming back as series regular). As for Reacher, Prime in the US released the first 3 issues on the first day and then they are doing an episode a week for the remaining five episodes of Season 2.

So if we got through the episode with (major cliffhanger that I’m not going to mention), we just need to wait a week for the next episode? A week I can handle.

I hate that too, Liz/Mary. I now wait until everything drops to start. This from someone who waited an entire summer to figure out who shot JR.

I watch more shows on regular channels than I do on streaming channels. Two that I am really looking forward to, Dark Winds on AMC, and Will Trent on ABC. I was so happy these great shows were renewed and that they repeated the previous season so people could catch up. Thanks for all the suggestions of shows I haven’t seen. I do have a movie recommendation “The Boys in the Boat”, a terrific movie!

They just released a preview of Will Trent Season 2 the other day. Dark Winds Season 3 will likely be a while thanks to the strikes.

Thanks for the recommendation. I don’t know Will Trent–will need to explore that.

Two great series. I love Brokenwood–the seasons are too short, but I also enjoy a rewatch. I need to go to New Zealand.

I look forward to finally actually seeing Only Murders in the building. Since they are starting to show the 1st season on ABC. Since I didn’t get Netflix. Also looking forward to Miss Scarlett and the Duke.

I hope you enjoy ONLY MURDERS. It’s great that they’re on ABC now. Hope they keep doing that for other streaming shows.

I’m looking forward to catching up on The Crown – I’ve only watched the first two episodes of the last season.
Reacher and The Lincoln Lawyer are favorites in our house.
I haven’t seen Only Murders in the Building and hope to be able to find it on cable – maybe ABC I’ll have to look for it.

True confessions–I haven’t watched THE CROWN. Maybe this year. Though it’s so sad…

BTW, I looked up my Fall TV schedule printout when I got to work and for regular network TV, there are zero new shows I’m interested in watching thus far.
So all my returning series are the only shows I’m looking forward to. The NCIS shows, the Law & Order shows and a few other ones.
Oh, and while I’m interested in checking out Miss Scarlet and the Duke, I want to start at Season 1 and since I don’t have PBS or Prime, I am stuck at the moment.

Watching some of “Yellowstone” and “Only Murders in the Building” along with “Will Trent.” We used to watch so many series and now we don’t. Hubby Dearest just doesn’t seem to want to watch them. I am enjoying “Only Murders in the Building” and “Yellowstone,” but we are way behind on that series. Used to love NCIS but when Leroy Jethro Gibbs left so did we. Oh well. I liked “The Equalizer” with Queen Latifa but Hubby Dearest did not. So, we shall we?
