International Women’s Day

Jessie: In New Hampshire where the skies are grey and the puddles are everywhere!

Today is International Women’s Day! For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this celebratory date, this website is a treasure trove of information. Harkening back to 1911, it is a time to celebrate the achievements of women, to raise awareness of opportunities to increase equality, and to highlight organizations that do both.

There are so many ways to mark the date. Here are a few to consider if you would like to get in on the fun!

  • Share the name and accomplishment of a historical woman who may not be as well known as she should be on social media. The podcast, and accompanying website, What’s Her Name, is an inspiring source of just such women.
  • Write a note or a text, or make a phone call to an important woman in your life.
  • Seek out a woman-owned business for items on your shopping list
  • Make a recipe that was a specialty of one of the women in your family
  • Pick up a novel by a female writer. But this one is especially great any day of the year!

I plan to celebrate by starting out the day by reading a bit from an autobiography by the artist Marianne North. Later I will bake a bundt cake in my grandmother’s pan while listening to back-to-back podcast episodes from What’s Her Name and Lost Ladies of Lit. I will attend my knitting group where I plan to add a few inches to a pair of socks that I am creating all because one of my dear sisters encouraged me to learn this highly gendered craft. And, I will be checking this blog throughout the day to stay in touch with our readers! What could be better?

Readers, do you celebrate International Women’s Day? If so, what are your plans?

  1. What a great list of things we can do, Jessie. I will stop by my favorite woman-owned business downtown today, and I’m in the middle of reading a novel by Mindy Quigley. Does it count that I’m writing a first draft about a woman-owned business – Country Store Mystery #13, Scone Cold Dead? ;^)

Also, today over on Mystery Lovers’ Kitchen I’m sharing a recipe from a 1920s women’s cookbook! https://www.mysteryloverskitchen.com/2024/03/1920s-spice-cake-maddiedayauthor.html

  2. I’m working now that I am the primary salary since The Hubby’s retirement. But I did recently buy books from the woman-owned Mystery Lovers Bookshop.

  3. I love Women’s Day. I’ll probably stop by my local crafter’s shop that has crafts made from local women. Lovely place. aprilbluetx at yahoo dot com

  4. Great post and wonderful ways to honor women who came before us and women who are with us. I’ll be reading Act Like A Lady, Think Like a Lord by Celeste Connally. I’ll be chatting with my mom later today. At 95 she’s lived a good life and has many stories to share.

  5. Maybe not “international”, but being a woman that’s lived long enough to see woman go from almost no rights to having many (albeit that some are trying to turn back the clock), I celebrate being a modern day woman every day – and give thanks for the opportunity to do so. 🙂 I say “THREE CHEERS” to all woman and may each of us accomplish all that our potential allows us to – and then some! Makes me think of the saying “I am woman – hear me roar!” and think of all the women before me that helped me to be where I am and hopefully maybe I’ve passed that on to someone in the younger generation.
