Halloween Candy

by Barb, somewhere on Route 95, the Florida Turnpike, or US Route 1, between Fort Lauderdale and Key West!

Tell me true, Wickeds. What is your favorite Halloween candy? The one you snuck out of your kids bags or hoped would be left over in your bowl at the end of the night. (Or the one, that if it was left over, you thought “Uh-oh” when you saw it.)

Bonus question: What’s a Halloween candy you absolutely loathe?

Edith: That’s easy. I always be sure to have some Baby Ruth mini candy bars in the collection to give out, but they never make it to the door. That combination of chocolate, caramel, and nuts is perfection. Reese’s peanut butter cups and peanut M&Ms often also go missing – straight to my office drawer for a mid-writing snack. Loathe? Candy bars with coconut.

Sherry: Really, Edith? No coconut? I didn’t know that about you! We’d make a great team because I’d love to have the Mounds and Almonds Joys! I like almost anything with chocolate, but you all can have my share of the candy corn. It’s just too sweet.

Julie: Edith, my father’s favorite candy are Baby Ruths. I’m always so grateful for Halloween mini sizes so that I can stock him up! Sherry, I loved candy corn back in the day, but it is sweet. When I was a kid, I loved Hershey bars, but these days love Mounds. When I was a kid I loathed Good n Plentys, but now I love them. In real life I love Twizzlers, but the mini packs are too chewy. The art of good Halloween candy is tricky.

Barb: This was sort of a trick question because I actually like candy corn. Unpopular opinion, I know. I like the little pumpkins made out of the same candy, too. Favorite Halloween candy? Baby Ruths or Clark bars. And cheers to that person in the neighborhood who passes out full-size bars.

Readers: Tell us your favorite. Candy you love, candy you loathe.

  1. I buy 2 bags of candy and most years we don’t get any Trick or Treaters. My favorite is KitKats and my husbands favorite are Peanut Butter Cups.

  2. I’m not a real big candy eater most of the time. I prefer really dark chocolate over milk chocolate and love the Ghirardelli Twilight Delight chocolate bars. And since childhood Sweetarts and Spree are my favorites!

  3. Halloween Candy I hate? – Candy corn or any kind of candy made with the same process. Just awful. Like Edith I despise coconut as well.

Halloween Candy I love – Well almost anything that is chocolate based. But Reese’s Peanut Butter cups are definitely a favorite.

I’m giving out Tootsie roll products and some Hershey products as well. I’ve got one bag of the latter and 2 nearly 5-pound bags of the former. Plus comic books and special prizes should anyone have good costumes.

  4. Happy Halloween to everyone! May your day (and evening) be more treats than tricks!

Favorite old time candy hands down was Mary Jane peanut butter kisses. You could only get them at Halloween and were greatly anticipated. I still buy them at Halloween if I can find them. Later favorite is Heath Bars. Candy I do NOT like is any form of gummy candy. Reminds me too much of gum drops, which I never cared for (except for the black ones).

  5. Candy is a wonderful thing lol! I always take my favorites out of the Halloween bowl before trick-or-treaters arrive, and those include Milk Duds, Butterfingers, Heath bars, probably a Kit Kat or two.

  9. Give me chocolate, and I’m happy. Milky Ways, Twixs, Mounds (allergic to nuts, so Sherry gets my Almond Joys), M&Ms….

And Barbara can have my Candy Corn.

But I’m really excited that mint season is here. I love mint, especially in my chocolate.

  10. Baby Ruths are high on my list of favorites, but I like Butterfingers, Snickers and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups just as much. Hershey’s chocolate bars are good, too. I have never liked candy corn, and I won’t mind if you eat all of it if I ever have some in my house.

  11. Happy Halloween everyone 🍅. I like the Hersheys minis Mr. Goodbar and Dark Chocolate bars, Dark Chocolate Milky ways & Snickers and Junior Mints. Not a fan of the Sweet Tarts.

Just a reminder to those with pets. Keep them safe in a closed room if you’re answering the door so they don’t escape. And keep the candy and treats out of their reach, especially chocolates and anything with raisins.

  12. I love anything chocolate, milk and dark. Just keep the coconut out of it. I don’t even like the thought of licorice.

    Happy ghoulie night.

  13. Oh my, another chocolate fan here, almost anything with chocolate, milk or dark. Sadly, I like most candy. Barb, you can have any candy corn that finds its way to my house though. I cannot stand that stuff. Happy Haunting to you all!

  14. I love chocolate and Reese’s, but I could say no after one or two. What I could not pass up was Laffy-Taffy. Don’t know why, but that chewy, fruity, sweetness did me in all the time. Until I got a crown last year. No more taffy for this girl.

Hard pass on candy corn. What’s the point?

  15. What fun! Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups – Yea! I store them in the freezer and even though I haven’t had a trick or treater in over 20 years, I tell myself there could always be a first time. Loath – candy corn. Yuck. I was actually happy my folks used to toss it out of my trick or treat bag as soon as I got home. I can confess now – I used to eat the apples as soon as I got them. I knew my folks would toss them, and I loved them. In all those years….nary a problem.
