Reading, Watching, and Listening with Liz and Julie

by Julie and Liz, figuring out what to do when the nights are long and the days are short

Liz and I had a fun conversation in lieu of a blog post this month. What are we reading/watching/listening to?

Here’s the list of what we talked about on this video! All of the titles are links, so go and and click.

What are you watching/listening to/reading this month?

25 Thoughts

  1. Have you seen A Man On The Inside with Ted Danson? It’s on Netflix. It’s a terrific 8-episode series. I finished Blue Christmas Bones by Carolyn Haines, Planes, Candy Canes and Hearses by Catherine Bruns. Echo by Track Clark was a great read.

  2. What a fun conversation! We are watching the third (and last, sniff) season of the delightful and poignant Somebody Somewhere. And I’m finally reading the Finlay Donovan series.

  3. I’ll have to check out the video later tonight but I do like the topic for sure.

This month I’m watching: The last episodes of the new seasons (or as they get billed for promotional purposes, “fall finales”) of the various TV shows that I watch. That will include the final two episodes of Blue Bloods over the next two weeks. I’ve been very “ehh” towards a number of shows I watch regularly so far this season and I’m behind on a few of them to the point where it is almost like I don’t care anymore and might drop them. Otherwise, I’m continuing in my various re-watches of some series and watching others like Chicago P.D. for the first time.

What I’m reading: Finished the last couple of Mindy Quiqley Deep Dish mystery books, working on Vicki Delany’s A SLAY RIDE TOGETHER WITH YOU, the first volume of the Micronauts Marvel Comics series omnibus collection, plus a few other books to close out the year. I’m having serious reservations about trying to put together a best of list this year. I don’t feel I’ve read enough and there’s so many books still waiting to be read. ARGH!

What I’m listening to: I’m listening to a lot of stuff because I’ve been trying to get some delayed album reviews done before the end of the year. So albums by Todd Michael Hall, Accept, Bruce Dickinson, House of Lords, Kings of Mercia, Ian Hunter and so many more are getting spins so I can do my best of 2024 list. And my last Cassette Chronicles article of the year goes up today so I was checking out the 1984 self-titled Great White album for that this week. Happily, my series has been renewed for 2025 so there will be more Chronicles to come. Oh, and since it is now past December 1st, I’ll break out my Trans-Siberian Orchestra CDs to listen to them.

      1. Julie, all those bands I list are hard rock or heavy metal so I’m not sure you will like any of them. Ian Hunter is probably classic rock and he’s amazing. He’s in his 80s now and still turning out great music. He was the singer for that song “All the Young Dudes”, if that helps you place him.

  4. We are trying out A Man on the Inside on Netflix. I think it could be cute; The Hubby isn’t sure.

I just wrapped a cute middle-grade mystery – FINNEY AND THE SECRET TUNNEL – and am about to start Stuart Turton’s THE LAST MURDER AT THE END OF THE WORLD.

  5. I have been gathering my Christmas themed mysteries to read. I love the Great British Bake Off series.

  6. I’ve watched both THREE WISE MEN AND A BABY and THREE WISER MEN AND A BOY from Hallmark. Really enjoyed the first, but the second wasn’t nearly as good. Also watched A CHRISTMAS CASTLE PROPOSAL on Great American Family. It was a sequel to a non-Christmas movie they had aired last year. I enjoyed parts of it, but there were other things I didn’t enjoy.

Reading wise, I’m in the middle of reading the Christmas cozies I’d saved for December.

  7. I’m reading Echo by Tracy Clark right now, with Alex Segura’s Alter Ego next up. I’m enjoying James by Percival Everett too. Last week I read The Last King of California by Jordan Harper, a wild, rough violent ride with gorgeous writing.

  8. Last night I finished reading The Ministry of Time. Very good. Don’t know where I’m going next.

I’m watching Shrinking, Bad Sisters, A Man on the Inside, Somebody, Somewhere, and Outlander.

Most of the podcasts I listen to are political and I’m avoiding them like the plague.

  9. Enjoyed watching Julie and Liz’s podcast.
Took me until this evening to get to see it. At this time of evening, I’m pooped so I’ll leave the question part to another time. 🙂

  10. Just finished Great British Baking Show and about to finish season 3 of The Morning Show. Looking forward to the second season of Shetland with the female leads this month. Reading Cristofer Carlsson’s Under the Storm. His books are set in Sweden and while slow to start, they have captivated me. Also contributing to my own substack Author Mark Jacobs and continuing to write book 2 of my crime fiction series set in Seattle.
