One Step at a Time: Tacking Goals

It’s the third week of January. How are your goals going?

I believe in setting audacious goals. And then breaking them down into manageable steps so that I can accomplish them. In this video I use seeing my book on a Times Square billboard as an audacious goal. A lot of that is out of my control. But writing a good book? I can do that.

But “writing a good book” is too big. I also discuss breaking it down into segments, and planning those out.

It’s not too late to set goals for the new year, and to make them happen!

  1. Something I learned in taekwondo: You’ll be much better accomplishing a big goal (writing a book, earning a Black belt), if you break it into manageable chunks.

  2. I’m not interested in podcasts. I can’t wear EarPods and I don’t want to disturb those around me listening to audio anything. I love to read silently. As an aside to your question, that’s how I attack large reading self assignments.

  3. Totally agree with you about breaking down goals to steps. To me goals are like a ladder, you take a lot of steps to get to the top. The bigger the goal the more steps it takes to get there. It’s all about keeping your eye on the goal, but doing the hard work to get up each and every step. I think the problem is with some is they see the goal and think they have to get there NOW without putting in the work. Life and goals don’t work that way. It’s like hubby saying at 25 at what age he wanted to retire. Folks laughed at him, but he worked hard. Very hard and often at times where most others took the easy way out by doing things like changing jobs for a few pennies more income and then ended up just having to start over on their retirement. Yes, it meant set backs or times when he would have loved to give up, but for family and being able to realize his end goal, he keep going. At 55, he fulfilled his goal and was able to retire whereas most of his co-workers had to keep on working until they reached social security age. I figure being an author is the same way. While there might be ups and down getting to the achievement of making that next step, it’s the hard work and not giving up that gets you there. To achieve any major goal, I think we all must be goal setters or one would flounder and often times slip down stairs instead of moving up the ladder.
