Hey there! Liz here, weighing in on the topic of goals – which I have a love/hate relationship with.
I mean, I love setting goals and achieving them. I also know myself, and I can totally drive myself nuts in so many ways when it comes to goals – from setting to achieving them.
So this year, I’m trying to do something different with goals – which I’m talking about in the video below.
Readers, are you setting goals? How are you approaching them this year?
I haven’t set goals – aside from deadlines – in a couple of years. I probably should get back to that. But… deadlines.

Thanks for sharing your plans and hopes for 2025. You need to forgive yourself for sticking to safe paths if you support yourself with your writing year in and year out. Don’t forget that many people who appear to set out bravely in a new direction have a money-earning partner or a big savings account to fall back on if it doesn’t work out. I didn’t write my first mystery until I was sure my husband was happy to support me while I sat at my desk turning out chapters–or, on some days, stared into space.

My goals for 2025 are to stretch boundaries, explore new things and dare to make dreams a reality. While those may sound normal to some and unrealistic to other, for me they speak of one getting older whose body doesn’t always allow what one wants and the realization that some things may soon become difficult or unable to attain. While I might set goals, I’m also (thanks to retirement and a small bit of funds that allow it) open to change. Sometimes it opens up to us that the way from A to B isn’t always a straight line and to bend the path makes the journey more enjoyable. We are trying to mark off more items off our bucket list before we might not be able to travel to do them. So some of my goals are to make trips to be able to mark at least two of those items off the list. Along the way, if I’m able to complete the goal of trying something new or different, all the better. Another goal is to read more, to find new to me authors, explore new genre. With my body demanding more sitting time in the recliner (and on the porch some warmer weather), I think I’ll be able to not only complete that goal, but to also complete the goal to photograph some new critter or at least get better photos of one of those that visit us daily. And lastly, with a family history of weight problems and I for one having fought it all my adult life, I want to lose some weight. This time though I’m not trying to get in that smaller sized jeans (which is a good reward but not the goal), but to get healthier to postpone some eventual difficulties. When getting around starts to be a problem, one of the things causing that problem is the excess pounds we move around in. So, daily I will be working on this goal all year while not punishing myself for a daily slip or a rare special treat, but keeping my eye on the end goal. We must all remember to set attainable goals in the short range so as not to get discouraged in trying to reach to long range goals.
